Practice Safe Driving In The Winter

Published on October 24th, 2019

As the cold weather closes in, we want to make sure you are practicing safe driving tips in the winter for the slippery and snowy roads. If you ever find yourself in an accident, contact our Rockford attorneys and we will help you get through the process of recovering. Here are some tips for driving in the cold weather and snow.

Get Your Car Serviced

No one wants a broken down car in the winter, so make sure your car is in good condition to withstand the colder and harsher weather. Take your car into an auto shop and allow a professional to check for leaks, worn hoses, or other needed repairs and replacements.

Drive Slowly

Make sure you adjust your speed to account for lower traction when you are driving on snow and ice. Also make sure you have tires equipped for the weather. When you step on the gas, bring your foot down slowly to make sure you avoid skidding as you regain traction.

Keep A Safe Distance From Other Cars

Consider keeping a longer distance from other cars on the road during bad weather to account for unexpected stopping by either you or another vehicle.

Recall Checks

Sometimes, cars get recalled for specific vehicle malfunctions. Before you drive yours this winter, check if your car has had any recalls by going to NHTSA’s website and figuring out next steps if your car has had one.

Stock The Vehicle

Carry items that you know would be good to have handy during the winter. For example, in your trunk you should have a snow shovel, broom, and ice scraper to help with your car if it gets snowed on overnight. You should also consider holding on to jumper cables, a flashlight, and warning devices. Always have your phone charged before longer trips in case you need to reach someone in an emergency.

Working Lights

Make sure all your lights are in working order—this includes headlights, brake lights, turn signals, emergency flashers, and even your interior lights. You want to be seen in bad weather to avoid any accidents.
